In December 1997, more than 700 children in Japan were rushed to the hospital when an episode of an animated series based on the Nintendo game Pocket Monsters caused them to have convulsions. A total of 208 children aged three and above were detained in the hospital after the broadcast. According to experts, the fits were caused by a sequence in which red lights flashed from the eyes of the character Pikachu.
